Snow

One thing that I am all too familiar with is snow. In my area of the country, we get snow over three months of the year-December, January, and February. It is so beautiful to be home inside watching the snow fall outside. But not too much fun to drive through. ;)

When I was in college I met a young man from Brazil who was here to learn English for a job he would soon start. I remember him being fascinated the first time he saw snow fall. I didn’t see the wonder in it. It’s something we see every year here. It would probably be like me going to Australia and seeing a kangaroo for the first time. To me it would be amazing-to an aussie it wouldn’t be all that exciting. But I took the time to listen to my friend, to read the poem he wrote about seeing snow fall from the sky for the first time. I saw the wonder of the experience through his eyes. It was the most magical thing he’d ever seen.

This week I had a conversation with one of my online friends, who lives in South America. He said it was very hot where he lives; I wrote and told him it is the opposite here. He then asked me if it is snowing where I live. I told him that we won’t have snow where I live for about another month. This then prompted further discussion about snow. My friend had seen snow on mountaintops, but had never seen snow fall, and didn’t know what snow felt like. I explained that snow falls from the sky in the form of snowflakes. Every snowflake that falls is different. When a snowflake lands on your skin, the warmth of your skin makes the snow melt. It is a cold and wet sensation. I then pointed out that every snowflake has 6 points on it-or a multiple of 6 (12, 18, 24)-never 3 or 4 or 5. Always 6. Here is an example:

It is very beautiful to be inside, warm and cozy, safe inside your home with a cup of hot chocolate, a cat on your lap, watching the snow fall.

Nieve

Una cosa que estoy demasiado familiarizado con es la nieve. En mi zona del país, nos podemos hacer nieve más de tres meses del año de Diciembre, Enero y Febrero. Es tan hermoso por ser el hogar interior al ver caer la nieve fuera. Pero no demasiado divertido de conducir través. ;)

Cuando estaba en la Universidad conocí a un hombre joven de Brasil que estaba aquí para aprender a inglés para un trabajo que empezaría pronto. Recuerdo que le está fascinado la primera vez que vio la nieve caída. No vi la maravilla en el. Es algo que vemos cada año aquí. Probablemente sería como me va a Australia y ver un canguro por primera vez. Me lo sería ser sorprendente-para un aussie no sería tan emocionante. Pero me tomé el tiempo para escuchar a mi amigo, a leer el poema que escribió acerca de ver nieve caer desde el cielo por primera vez. Vi la maravilla de la experiencia a través de sus ojos. Fue lo más mágico que nunca había visto.

Esta semana tuve una conversación con uno de mis amigos en línea, que vive en América del Sur. Dijo que era muy caliente donde vive; Escribí y le dijo que es el opuesto aquí. Entonces me preguntó si es nieve donde vivo. Le dije que no tenemos nieve donde vivo para otro mes. Este solicitará más discusión sobre la nieve. Mi amigo había visto la nieve en las cumbres, pero nunca había visto la nieve caída y no sabía qué nieve se sentía. Le expliqué que la nieve cae del cielo en forma de copos de nieve. Cada copo de nieve que cae es diferente. Cuando un copo de nieve cae en la piel, el calor de su piel hace la nieve derretirse. Es una sensación fría y húmeda. Luego señalé que cada copo de nieve tiene 6 puntos en él- o un múltiplo de 6 (12, 18, 24)-nunca 3 o 4 o 5. Siempre 6. Aquí está un ejemplo:

Es muy hermoso para estar en el interior, cálido y acogedor, seguro dentro de su hogar con una taza de chocolate caliente, un gato en su regazo, al ver caer la nieve.

Está nevando en donde está ahora? Si no, no puedo hacer que nieve. Pero conozco a alguien que puede….
